How do you run a FRC team if you have little experience with FIRST?
Lucky for the new teams out there, there are some fantastic documents on how to successfully run a rookie FIRST Robotics Competition team. Mentors of rookie FRC teams should utilize FIRSTnemo.org, a collaborative site for mentors to share tips and resources.
In addition, read the entire document (click on image below), titled “Running a FIRST Team” by Simbotics, FIRST Team #1114.
Two really important things to remember:
Organization. Make sure all parts of your team are organized – parents, mentors, schools, and most importantly, the students. Create leadership roles and make sure everyone knows their niche on the team. Writing up specific job descriptions for reach role can be very helpful going into the Build Season.
Support. Make sure that your team has the support it needs to thrive and succeed. Look for mentors from local businesses or colleges. Search for other FIRST Robotics Competition teams around you that can help you if you get stuck. Get the parents on board – each student will need the support of their family in order to get through the 6-week craziness.
