As FRC rookies, brainstorming, prototyping, and designing your first robot is extremely exciting.  However, amidst all the chaos of build season, it’s easy to lose sight of something that’s equally important: non-technical tasks.

Non-tech can range from website design, to buttons and t-shirts, to fundraising, to award writing.  While it may not seem like it, the non-technical aspect of your team can be immensely important.

It’s not cheap to build a robot.  Fundraising and connecting with potential sponsors is immensely important in doing this.  Don’t leave this job to the adults. Fundraising also builds business and communication skills that will be helpful in college and beyond.

Several awards are also given for website design, team spirit, and image.  The most prestigious award for rookies is the Rookie All-Star Award.  The award goes to teams who “exemplifies a young but strong partnership effort, as well as implementing the the mission of FIRST to inspire students to learn more about science and technology.”  We were fortunate to get the award last year, which guaranteed us a spot in the World Championships.

All in all, if you do put some focus on non-tech, good things are bound to come your way!
