Pick your drivers (and drive team coach!) before week two. As soon as your robot moves – even the slightest bit – your drivers need to start practicing with it. In addition, your programming team needs to work with the drivers to iron out the controls, customizing them to the driver’s liking.
Every moment of time available to practice should be utilized, because the drivers often make the difference in competition. You can have the best robot, but unless your drivers are super comfortable with controlling it, it is likely that the robot won’t live up to its make.
FIRST Team #1114 has produced some great materials on what qualities drivers should have – click here and scroll down to “driver selection”.
In addition, the most important quality is dedication. The drivers need to be dedicated enough to the team that they will find times to come and practice when the robot isn’t being worked on – which is harder than it sounds!
